• Purpose

AWA unites low-income workers in Anchorage and Southcentral Alaska through a membership association built by and for the workers themselves, with allies including business owners, clergy, unions, professionals, students and others to eliminate poverty conditions. AWA has built a self-help membership benefit program to meet immediate survival needs while organizing for long-term change.

  • History

AWA began in late 2000 when concerned citizens and low-income working people in Anchorage heard of the success of organizing drives of seasonal workers and farm workers in Oregon and began building their own association in Anchorage, AK.

  • What you can do

Volunteers are urgently needed to join AWA members in building our self-help benefit program, strengthen AWA’s membership activities and assist at seasonal events. Others help collect food, clothing, winter supplies or introduce us to their group or faith organization.

AWA’s members are the backbone of the economy. We are…

  • workers in fish processing

  • subcontractors in the petroleum industry on the North Slope

  • personal care attendants

  • service workers at restaurants, stores, cafes and throughout the tourism industry

  • “gig” workers for Uber and Lyft, as well as other “gig” employers

Despite the essential work that we do, we often receive wages that don’t cover survival needs for a family.
